Laughter broke out at Exmouth Petty Sessions as Sergt. Lionel Humphries of the Royal Marines, who was charged with carrying a rifle with no licence, was asked by the chairman: “whose gun was it?” The Defendant replied: “It belonged to the Home Guard.”

Sergt. Humphries, who pleaded guilty to the charge, received a “very lenient” fine of 5s.
