EXMOUTH Community College was home to jubilant scenes today as scores of students received their A level grades.

The college has made improvement on last year's results with a rise in the number of students achieving A and Bs.

A delighted principal, Tony Alexander, said there had been an increase in people attaining grade A to near 20 per cent, with almost four in five students achieving A to C marks.

The overall pass rate was 95 per cent - three per cent higher than 2008.

Mr Alexander, reflecting on the results, said: "I am very proud. There has been a definite improvement on last year."

"We have ten students who gained at least three grade As, some achieved four or five, and are going off to top universities."

Matt Kain, 18, who lives in Orchard Close, Lympstone, achieved 5 grade As in his A levels. He studied maths, further maths, physics, chemistry and music.

He said: "I was very happy with the marks. I am relieved they are all over."

Matt, who hopes to become a doctor, will now go to Oxford University to study medicine. "This should be a lot more hard work as it is a six-year course - I'm a glutton for punishment as far as studying is concerned."

Chloe Tomlinson, 18, of Winchester Drive, studied English language and literature, art and design, film studies and media studies received all A grades and A level.

"I am delighted with the marks and I am looking forward to going to university next month. I was not expecting these marks at all.

"The marks were really nerve racking but I am so glad I came out with such good results.
