SILVER surfers spent the day learning about the internet as part of a scheme designed to keep abreast of the latest technology.

Two events, held in Exmouth and Sidmouth, gave people over the age of 50 living in sheltered accommodation the opportunity to use a computer and surf the internet.

District council Home Safeguard staff teamed up with Exmouth Community College pupils to highlight the importance of getting to grips with computers.

The focus of this year's event was internet access, Nintendo Wii and digital cameras.

Exmouth Community College students lent a hand with the tutoring, explaining how the internet can aid people to live independently.

Home Safeguard assistant manager Amy Gilbert said: "All in all residents found the experience extremely beneficial and worthwhile and we are already receiving enquiries as to whether we will be running the event again next year. The good news is yes, we will.
