Police have stepped up town centre patrols because staff opening up shops claim they are intimidated by rough sleepers causing trouble.
Town centre officers said staff around the Magnolia Centre had reported the problems, prompting police to act.
Exmouth’s neighbourhood police team said it was working closely with local businesses, the Street Homeless Outreach Team (SHOT) and Exmouth’s Open Door Centre.
A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said officers were working to combat the problems.
“We have been increasing high-visibility patrol to the rear service area and parking area of the Magnolia shopping centre,” the spokesperson said.
“This is due to reports of people loitering, intimidating members of staff and creating environmental waste.
“This type of behaviour is not acceptable.
“We will ensure that we work hard at reducing reports of this nature.”
