Storm lovers flocked to Exmouth seafront on Tuesday night for a spectacular natural lightshow of ‘incredible’ sheet and forked lightning.

The thunder and lightning, which hit the south west at around midnight and raged on until the early hours of the morning, prompted scores of people suffering from storm insomnia to leave their beds and head outside.

As flashes of lightning lit up the night’s sky in Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton, many storm watchers grabbed their cameras to capture these dramatic images.

Storm watcher Debs Nikolov, from Exmouth, posted her storm photo on Facebook.

She said: “Watching TV last night at 11.45, I couldn’t keep my eyes open so switched off the TV and light and lay down. Then the room started lighting up big style.

“We’d heard the thunder rumbles since about 11pm but hadn’t realised the light show that was going on outside! Could not miss this opportunity so I got up, grabbed hubby, got the car keys (still in PJs) and we drove down to the beachfront to sit and watch the incredible sheet and fork lightning spectacular over the water. Us and dozens of others!!!

“The seafront was packed with other crazy storm lovers. It raged on until well after 1am by which stage of course I was wide awake but so worth it as it was one of the best storms I’ve seen in the UK. Awesome.”
