Exmouth’s Famous Old Barrel appears to be temporarily closed

The Famous Old Barrel pub – an ‘iconic’ music venue in Exmouth – appears to have temporarily closed.
According to Lemonrock – the UK’s online gig-guide listings site – the venue’s gigs ‘are to be considered cancelled until further notice’.
Lemonrock also adds ‘the Barrel is temporarily closed. Awaits brewery relief manager’.
Affected events include the regular Monday-night jam, which moved to The Merchant on The Strand on November 6.
In a post on The Merchant’s Facebook site, the Jam Night organisers said: “As I’m sure you’ve all heard, The Famous Old Barrel has closed until further notice. We aim to keep its prestigious full band jam night session alive, so we have found a new venue.”
Local musicians are concerned about the loss of the venue, which has a small, purpose-built stage area and PA facilities.
“I can quite happily speak for the music community,” says local musician Martin Weller. “It’s a huge disappointment to lose such an iconic venue, one that we all support and lots of us have done so for many years.
“It’s also the conduit for new acts to come through, whether they be solo artists or bands or people jamming together. Barclay and Malcolm that used to run the thing [the jam night] have done a fantastic job on it. They used to record the jam sessions. Some of that was used and we did an album, sold that for charity, so all sorts of things were coming out of the Barrel, and have done so for many years.
“It’s a desperate shame to lose it. We’re all hoping that it’s not going to be gone for too long.”
The Journal has requested confirmation of the temporary closure from the pub’s management.
