Officers said a number of addresses have received a letter claiming to be sent by FNB 2010 FIFA world cup promotions - stating the recipient has won �225,000 in a lottery draw made in Switzerland.

The police are urging people to ignore the letter and throw it away because it is a fake.

The letter claims the lottery was funded by FIFA 2010 world cup and includes sponsors, logos and brand names of well known international brands and companies.

The letter claims the prize will be forwarded on once the winner pays a handling fee.

The police said an accompanying letter asking for personal details and bank details, carries a postal address of Oxford Street, London

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said: "The letter is fake.

You can only win a lottery if you have entered it.

"Never give out your personal details or bank details to third parties.

"Never forward any money on the promise of receiving a cash prize.

"Disregard the letter and throw it away.

"Please warn elderly friends or relatives as these fictitious companies and conmen target the vulnerable and elderly.
