A group of quilters from Exmouth have created 10 bedcovers to be sent to suvivors of the Grenfell Tower distaster earlier this year.

A group of Exmouth quilters have ‘sent a hug’ to families who have lost their homes in the Grenfell Tower disaster earlier this year.

Exmouth’s ‘Quilting Fun’ has sent 10 bedcovers to those who are still displaced from their homes due to the North Kensington tower block fire.

After the disaster, group coordinator Clare Dawson, who once worked in that area of London, decided to act.

South West Quilters had already arranged to send 200 quilts in a ‘hug from Cornwall’ and Clare arranged for the Exmouth group to be part of that.

Now 10 quilts made using donated material have been sent to the 150 families still displaced by the disaster five months on.

She said: “After the fire, I felt it was something I wanted to do to help.

“We were all appalled that people were left with nothing.

“It’s to show them that people are thinking of them. North Kensington is a really small place when you get to know it.

“There will be all sorts of aid thrown at them left, right and centre but I liked the idea of sending them a hug.”

The Exmouth quilters used materials donated by a Cornwall quilting workshop and also sold cushions to Bookrest, in Parade, to raise funds for extra bits a pieces.

There were also pieces of donated jeans which were used to form the quilts.

Clare said they were created cooperatively and that no quilt was put together by one single person.

The end result was 10 quilts some of which are traditional bed duvets while others can be used by those taking naps.

The finished articles have been sent to South West Quilters and will be placed on a website so members of the 150 families can access them.

Quilting Fun is a group run by Exmouth and District U3A, an organisation which helps retired and semi-retired people sign up for interest groups.

The quilting group is looking towards its next project and is always interested in new members. Anyone interested should go to https://u3asites.org.uk/exmouth/home
