A PE teacher in Exmouth reckons some local children have what it takes to be England’s next football superstars, following an inter-school tournament.

The tournament, held at Brixington Primary Academy, featured seven local schools, with year three, four, five and six pupils taking part.

Bassetts Farm Primary School, Withycombe Raleigh Primary School, Exeter Road Community Primary School, Otterton Primary School, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Woodbury Primary School all played in the competition.

Coaches from Exeter City’s football-in-the-community team volunteered as officials and substitute referees to ensure the tournament took place.

Kevin Macdonald, head of PE at Brixington, said: “Our children loved it. Quite of few of them said to me afterwards that there is nothing better than playing football on a sunny afternoon and missing their lessons.

“The tournament was played at a fantastic standard. I’m sure there is the next Wayne Rooney or Ross Barkley among them.

“We wanted it to be a friendly competition between the children, and we are now hoping to run it again next year.”
