The short term future of Exmouth’s town centre Post Office has been decided.

Rumours the Post Office in WHSmith is about to close have been circulating on local social media over the weekend after a tweet from @LabourLeft on Twitter included a list of Post Offices ‘threatened with closure’.

In a statement to the Exmouth Journal a spokeswoman for Post Office explained the confusion, she said: “This Post Office is sited in a WHSmith branch and it will remain there.

“I think the ‘confusion’ might be that we plan to change to a franchise arrangement whereby WHSmith will operate the branch in the future, rather than (as now) the Post Office.

“WHSmith already operate 135 Post Offices on a franchise arrangement and we plan to increase this because it is a successful way of ensuring our services remain on high streets.”

The news comes less than a week after WHSmith confirmed Exmouth’s store will remain open until at least 2021 after rumours the shop was set to close.
