EXMOUTH police have recovered more than �3,500 in unpaid fines after carrying out a sting to confront pay-shy culprits.

EXMOUTH police have recovered more than �3,500 in unpaid fines after carrying out a sting to confront pay-shy culprits.

Exmouth's neighbourhood team officers slapped offenders with instant court warrants as part of Operation Payback.

Officers visited homes and workplaces and warrants of arrest were issued for offenders who had failed to pay compensation, fines and costs issued by the courts.

In total more than �3,500 in unpaid fines and compensation to victims of crime was recovered by the police.

Acting sergeant Dave Evans, from Exmouth police, said: "Those named on the warrants were required to pay the outstanding amount on the spot.

"If they couldn't they were arrested and brought before a special sitting of Central Devon Magistrates Court.
