An international dragon boat racer from Exmouth is backing a new initiative to get service personnel into the sport.

Bernard Broadhurst, a former World Championship gold medallist with the Great Britain senior squad, is one of the organisers of Purple Warriors, a new dragon boat club, created specifically for serving and retired members of the armed forces who have some form of disability or impairment as a result of their service.

The idea is to help such personnel take up a new sport, then compete against clubs from around the UK.

It is also hoped there will be future opportunities to compete against similar teams of services personnel from other countries.

Bernard, of Sturges Road, who is also a serving Royal Marine, said: “I have been very lucky in my career and very fortunate in my sport and would like to help to give something back to both parts.”

The Exeter branch of Purple Warriors is holding its first training session on May 22.
