An Exmouth grandma who is attempting to raise funds so she can defend her athletics crown has thanked those who have supported her.

Jean Fail, 69, is a world 80-metre hurdles champion and needs to find more than £1,300 in order to defend her title in Malaga in September.

The staff at the town’s Natonwide bank branch recently held a cake and book sale for Jean, raising more than £460.

Jean told the Journal that total means she’s quite confident she can afford to travel to Spain in September to defend her title ‘without going into debt too much’.

She added: “I couldn’t believe what we raised – it was just unreal.

“I should be able to defend my title now but it was hard going.

“I could still do with a bit more but I should make it now.

“I just want to thank everyone who has supported me so far.”
