Exmouth has been named as the second hottest shopping location in the UK outside of central London.

The town lost out on the top spot to Bournemouth, said location specialists CACI, which compiled a list of the top 100 retail hot spots exclusively for Property Week magazine.

The hot 100 results looked at local economic variables, growth prospects and the impact of future projects.

They also looked at the growth prospects of each town in terms of the opportunity to add retail space, how well aligned the retail offer was to the demographics of the catchment area, how good the leisure offer was and how the population would grow over the next decade.

Liz Hamson, editor of Property Week, said: “The hot 100 has been compiled by location specialists CACI and is based on a comprehensive set of metrics that, crucially, have been weighted to focus on the retail potential of a location as well as how strongly it is already performing.

“What makes the list so fascinating is the number of gritty, historically down-at-heel locations on it – and the number of coastal towns.”

The top 10 are Bournemouth, Exmouth, Watford, Barnet, Diss, Oakham, Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Bishop’s Stortford and Farnham.
