This week we look back four years to when the people of Exmouth marked the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One by the symbolic ‘lights out’ service at the war memorial.

We take a look at the picture archives from 2014 when hundreds of Exmouth residents holding candles gathered around The Strand war memorial to mark 100 years since the start of World War One.

On Tuesday, August 4, 1914, the then Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe – we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” These famous words, which were spoken on the day Britain entered the war, were symbolised at the 100th anniversary ceremony by the blowing out of candles.

The evening closed with the Last Post and a two-minute silence, followed by a wreath-laying and the lone piper’s lament, leaving one candle lit.

Last Saturday (November 10) Exmouth held a ‘lights on’ service, four years after the ‘lights out’ event, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the war, when the lights across the country were once again lit.
