THREE homes are today left counting the cost of torrential rain that on Wednesday night hit East Devon.

THREE homes are today left counting the cost of torrential rain that on Wednesday night hit East Devon.

One basement of a home in Withycombe Village Road was completely engulfed by floodwater, and another two homes were each flooded by a foot of water.

The fire service said a blocked culvert in the road, which collapsed, caused the flooding.

Firefighters spent most of the day pumping out water and using sandbags to divert floodwater away from the properties.

The road at Regents Gate was closed while the floodwater was pumped away and the Highways Agency was called to asses the damage.

The police also attended the scene.
