Royal Marines will be given the ‘freedom of the town’ when Exmouth readopts them as part of Armed Forces Day celebrations.

Details of Armed Forces Day in Exmouth have been released, when the Royal Marines will be readopted by the town.

The family fun-filled day will be held on Saturday, June 22, in The Strand, starting at 9am with a host of stalls for the public to browse.

The fun ends at 7pm with the Beat Retreat from the Lympstone Commando Training Centre band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.

The military event is to raise funds for the Royal Marine Association and other local causes.

A host of entertainment and activity has been planned for the day, including morris dancing by The Sidmouth Steppers, displays from the still moving dance troupe, The Bombshells, and a performance from the Lymsptone Military Wives Choir.

There will also be entertainment from the Royal Marines physical training branch, the Devon and Somerset band air training corps, plus a cadet corps interval drill competition.

The day ends when the Beat Retreat will be played in the Estuary car park.

Jeff Trail, Royal Marine Association event coordinator, said: “Armed Forces Day is the opportunity for the general public to show support for the UK’s armed forces, past and present.

“It gives the public the chance to recognise the sacrifices that service personnel make, and are still making, for their country.”

At 10.10am, a parade led by The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Commando Training Centre will leave the Park Hotel and make its way along Exeter Road and The Parade, into The Strand.

There will be a wreath laying ceremony, which will be followed by a band display.

At the end of the display Exmouth’s mayor, councillor John Humphreys, will officially open the event.

The mayor will also conduct the Exmouth readoption ceremony – akin to giving the marines the freedom of the town.

This will be followed by the unique sight of a parade of serving Royal Marines, RM veterans and RM cadets exercising their right to march through Exmouth with bayonets fixed, colours flying and drums beating.

The parade will march along Rolle Street into the High Street towards the seafront, where a salute will be taken at the clock tower by the commando training centre’s Commandant.

Exmouth Town Council will host a civic reception at Exmouth Pavilion to mark the Marines’ readoption.
