The owner of Exmouth Fun Park says he hopes that a temporary reprieve offered to another seafront business could also be extended to his own.

East Devon District Council (EDDC) ended the fun park’s lease at the end of August, as it wants the site so it can pursue redevelopment plans.

These plans also concern the site of the nearby Harbour View Café, however the council has now offered the café a temporary lease extension, saying this will last until the site is needed for development.

As previously reported, Mr Wright applied to East Devon District Council on August 29 for an extension for the fun park, which EDDC rejected.

Mr Wright says he now hopes that the offer extended to the café could also be offered to his business, when EDDC discusses them both at an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday, September 13.

Mr Wright said: “I’m genuinely delighted for [Harbour View Café owner] Dawn Hirst and all of her staff. I’m hoping now with this meeting on September 13 that we may receive the same sort of treatment.”

The text of the offer which was previously sent to EDDC by Mr Wright’s solicitors reads: “In light of the fact that the council’s stated position is that it is still considering development proposals for the fun park, my client requests a further lease of 12 months.

“The lease would be at an open market rent; and contracted out of the 1954 Act; and subject to a mutual unconditional break on three months’ written notice.

“I appreciate the council’s position that it has ordered fencing and intends to secure the site on Wednesday but this does appear to me to be an entirely sensible proposal as it secures an ongoing rent for the council; and it answers some of the critics of the council; and importantly, it does not prevent any obstacle to development whatsoever given the terms proposed.

“My client needs a quick answer given the scheduled auction. If a quick answer cannot be given, is it possible to extend the current lease by one month (so as to be coterminous with that of Harbour View).

“This will allow my client to trade the last week of the school holidays and ensure that he has reasonable time for an ordered exit of Queen’s Drive.”
