Firefighters from Exmouth extinguished a blaze which broke out on Woodbury Common on Wednesday evening. Two crews were called shortly after 5.30pm to heath land near Bystock pools, at Sqaubmoor, to an area of common they believed had been on fire, but was out. On arrival they found a fire in woodland and used a main jet to tackle the blaze. The crews also used beaters to stop the fire from spreading. A further appliance was also called to the scene. A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: A call was received in the Devon fire control room reporting a fire involving heath land near Bystock Pools, Squabmoor, Woodbury Common. The fire was believed to be out but two fire appliances were mobilised to check. The two fire engines with watch commander Pratt in charge found there was indeed a deep seated fire in the woodland. They requested a third appliance with 4x4 capability and used beaters, small tools and a main jet to tackle the fire.
