EMERGENCY service workers in Exmouth swapped their ladders and fire tools for buckets of water and soap last weekend.

Scores of firemen and women from Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Topsham, took part in a fundraising car wash day on Saturday, September 19, to raise money for the Fire fighters charity.

The Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service fundraising event gave drivers the opportunity to learn about home fire safety while their cars received a gleaming polish.

The charity has three rehabilitation centres located in Devon, West Sussex and Cumbria which cost 9million to run per year.

A fire brigade spokeswoman said: "A firefighter's role naturally puts them at risk, which can occasionally lead to physical injury and emotional problems.

"It is reassuring, therefore, that if anything was to occur, they have the assistance of the charity.
