EXMOUTH firefighters on Sunday afternoon attempted to rescue a bird with lead weight caught around its leg.

The fire crew was called to the slipway on the Esplanade following reports the bird was in distress.

The fire crew was unsuccessful in catching the bird from the groynes at Exmouth, and the animal moved further out to sea.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and rescue Service spokesperson said: "The RSPCA was contacted but were unable to attend at the time as they were at a larger incident.
