Crews from Exmouth, Exeter, Topsham, Crediton and Ottery St Mary were called to Stovax, in Harrier Way, Sowton, Exeter, shortly before 9pm.
Exeter City Council was notified when minor asbestos was reported in the building's structure.
Firefighters wore breathing apparatus while tackling the blaze.
The incident command vehicle was also sent from Exmouth fire station.
Later the incident was scaled down to one appliance.
