TWO Exmouth detectives have been praised by police chiefs for their work in jailing a prolific burglar who robbed homes in Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth.
Detective constables Darren Campbell and Mike Chalmers were this month thanked for their 'dogged determination and investigative skills' in catching and convicting 63-year-old 'career criminal' Simon Leo Berkowitz.
East and Mid Devon superintendent Phil Kennedy said the pair went the 'extra mile' in securing the conviction, adding their work would 'contribute significantly' in improving confidence in the police.
Supt Kennedy thanked the pair for their 'efficiency and professionalism' saying: "These were serious crimes with a significant impact on victims."
Berkowitz's criminal career began in 1961, when his first offence was larceny, and spans until the present day.
He has burgled homes - and been convicted - throughout the south coast.
