Hillside House is set to become a care home

The owners of two Exmouth care homes are transforming an East Devon restaurant for their latest venture.

Family business Brandon Care Ltd has taken on Hillside House, Newton Poppleford.

Manager Wendy Marsh said she was undeterred after squatters stripped lead from the roof, wires from the walls, garden ornaments and even fittings that were bolted down.

The break-in happened earlier this year, between her viewing the property and the sale being finalised.

Wendy said there was now more work than they had planned for, but she still planned to turn it into a care home for up to 18 residents.

“We think it’s a fantastic site for a care home,” she said. “Long term, we are hoping to bring in a different way of doing things – it will be the first in the area, if not the country.”

Subject to planning permission, she hopes to develop a home that will give residents the dependence of their own front door, but with 24-hour care available.

The Exeter Road property is set in 16.5 acres, some of which could be used to benefit the community, potentially by offering some land as allotments.

She also plans to develop the former hotel’s spa into a tearoom and a gallery for local artists.

Hillside House will run alongside the company’s 34-bed Brandon House and the 24-bed Sheridan House, which are both in Exmouth.
