There will be no Christmas Cracker this year, organisers have confirmed.

Instead, ‘in lieu of the event’, Exmouth Town Council has partnered with Ocean on the seafront to present an indoor Christmas market on Sunday, December 3, running from 10.30am to 4pm.

Lisa Bowman, Exmouth’s town clerk, confirmed the news.

She said that Exmouth town councillors had ‘decided to change the delivery format of the Cracker in 2017’.

“This is due to a number of factors, including the high financial risk associated with adverse weather and uncertainty over the new street trading legislation which came into force across East Devon from the beginning of October.”

There will be free entry to the Exmouth Christmas Market, which will comprise festive stalls, “laden with gift ideas and festive foods”. Other events are also being arranged to coincide.

“There will be plenty of Christmassy treats to make the venue as enticing as possible,” said the town clerk, “including live entertainment, a hog roast and mulled wine on the terrace and Father Christmas for the little ones.

“We are also at the early stages of confirming a children’s lantern parade to coincide with the event and (hopefully) some wonderfully festive outdoor entertainment in Pavilion Gardens.

“Since there is a craft fair taking place in the Pavilion on the same day, we are hoping to bring everything together in a co-ordinated manner to enable us to attract lots of people to that area of the seafront.

“More information will be released as we confirm details, but anyone interested in taking a stall inside at Ocean, should email Zanna Whale at zwhale@ledleisure.co.uk or Cheyne Chorley at cchorley@ledleisure.co.uk to register their interest.”

Since its introduction in 2008, the Christmas Cracker had become a firm fixture in Exmouth’s festive calendar. The event – which really blossomed under the management of Exmouth town management officer Suzanne Birkett – took over The Strand for a day, with a mix of stalls and entertainment, culminating in a lantern parade, the switch-on of the Christmas lights and a fireworks finale.

In 2015, the event had to be cancelled, less than two days before the event, due to gale-force winds.
