AN Exmouth chippie is celebrating being crowned the best in the south west for serving up the perfect portion.

Krispies, in Exeter Road, has been named National Chip Week South West's perfect portion winner after its chips were crowned best in the region by customers.

Thousands of votes put Krispies in eighth position out of the whole of the UK and now the popular chippie is waiting to see if it can scoop the national title.

Krispies owner Tim Barnes, 30, and wife Kelly, 28, said they were delighted to win the perfect portion award.

Mr Barnes said: "Our customers come from near and far for their perfect portion, and we are delighted to be recognised for the fantastic quality of our chips.

"We take great pride in our chips and go to great lengths to guarantee they receive the best portion around.

"We were excited to hear we'd won. It's good for the shop and a credit to my staff.

"We use the best quality potatoes, Lincoln or Cambridgeshire Maris Pipers, and we try to cook every portion to order.

"We would like to win the national award, but I'm not sure if we will."

To help find the national winner, TV personality Keith Chegwin will be visiting the five top nationwide chippies and sampling the goods.

As part of this week's national celebration, Krispies is giving away 10p from every portion of chips it sells to Macmillan Cancer Support.

This is in recognition of the charity caring for Krispies worker Tracy Butler, who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Throughout the week prizes are on offer for customers - including a mountain bike, a Nintendo DS Lite, a Valentine's Day meal for two, a movie rental voucher for 20 or a personal training taster session with Mikey Neild.

Participants could also win one of hundreds of portions of Krispies' chips up for grabs.

Mr Barnes said: "When people come in and buy some chips, every portion gets a scratch card and therefore the chance to win one of the prizes on offer.

"People will be able to find out there and then if they have won."

An official prize-giving event will be held at the end of the week.
