Exmouth's 2017 carnival queen, Scarlett Hampson, aged nine, has set herself a walk backwards challenge.

Exmouth carnival queen Scarlett Hampson will walk backwards the entire length of the seafront to raise funds for the illuminated event.

The nine-year-old Exeter Road Primary School pupil came up with the idea of reverse walking after deciding a traditional sponsored walk was ‘boring’.

The youngster, of Helena Place, will set off at 11am from The Beach hotel on Saturday, October 7, and walk backwards to Orcombe Point.

She will be accompanied by her royal attendants, shaking collection buckets.

The youngster said she was feeling ‘confident’, no matter how long the walk took.

She isn’t planning any special gadgets to help; no backward facing mirror, or wearing her shoes back-to-front.

Scarlett’s mum, Rebecca Hampson, aged 47, who has a business in Exmouth Market said: “She’s practised in the market but she can’t go very far.

“She can walk forwards on the way home.”
