Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare said it has been ‘humbled’ by the selfless generosity of the Harbour View Café.
In the same week the iconic café announced it would close later this year to make way for district council redevelopment, Harbour View Café manager Dawn Hirst revealed she is backing a month-long coffee morning campaign, donating to the EX8 charity each time a cup of coffee is sold.
Pam Warren, Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare spokeswoman, said: “It’s such a selfless thing to do. They have to look for new premises and have all the stress of that, and the emotion. But they are still willing to help us raise money.
“With all they are going through, they are still thinking and doing for others.”
The café is giving Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare five pence per cup throughout March in recognition of the charity’s work.
Dawn said: “I didn’t want to pick just one day, as sometimes people want to support good causes, but aren’t free on specific days and times.
“I wanted to help raise the awareness of the fantastic work that Exmouth and Lympstone Hospiscare does.
“Cancer is a subject very close to my heart and, unfortunately, it touches far too many of us at some point in our lives.
“I lost my auntie to cancer some years ago and one of my best friends died last year from the disease.”
Dawn added: “I just wanted to do something positive while I still could and give a bit back for all the happy years I have enjoyed here.
“Hopefully, we will find a new home and be able to do it all again next year.”
The popular café, which has been run by Dawn’s family for 40 years, will close when its lease ends on August 31; Dawn is in the process of looking for new premises. The site has been earmarked for redevelopment by East Devon District Council.
