A popular Exmouth cafe and national social enterprise have joined forces with the aim of building a healthier community in the town.

The Point Bar & Grill is working with Coffee Companions to host a weekly ‘Companion Hour’, every Tuesday, from 11am.

During the hour, customers can indicate whether they would like company, by displaying the green or red side of a ‘chat mat’.

Proprietor, Richard White, said: “People often sit in coffee shops because they want to be surrounded by people, but don’t know how to ask for company.

“In Exmouth, there are lots of older people, young mums and those who work from home and need a break.

“It’s an opportunity for people to be there at the same time. It allows people the time and space to come and have a conversation.”

Richard said one of the scheme’s key aims is to bring different sections of the community together.

He added: “People start to glow when they get that interaction - especially people who don’t usually have it, such as older people – they light up.”
