EXMOUTH, Budleigh Salterton and Topsham fire crews made up 16 fire appliances sent to tackle a roof blaze that broke out in Honiton in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The fire crews were called to a home under renovation at Combe Hill, Combe Raleigh, at Honiton, shortly after 2.30 this morning, after a member of the public reported seeing the roof of a three-storey home on fire.

By 3.20am, some 30 per cent of the roof was alight.

An hour later 75 per cent of the roof and first floor was well alight and the fire crews wore 12 sets of breathing apparatus, used six hose reel jets and four main jets as they fought to bring the blaze under control.

Fire crews from across the county were drafted in to tackle the inferno.

Water bowsers from Torquay, Barnstaple, Exeter and Honiton were sent to the scene, as was the aerial appliance from Exeter.

Shortly after 4am the police closed the Honiton to Dunkeswell road as a precaution.

Just after 8am the fire crews withdrew from the building and were standing by while the building control officer carried out an assessment.

The fire brigade said the incident is still ongoing.
