EXETER council and housing association tenants are set to benefit from membership of Devon Home Choice.

EXETER council and housing association tenants are set to benefit from membership of Devon Home Choice.

The council and social housing tenants will be able to move across the county to take up jobs or be close to family in the same way as private sector tenants.

Devon Home Choice is due to go live by December 2009 with all 10 local housing authority partners in Devon, including Plymouth and Torbay, providing a joint choice based lettings scheme.

The scheme will provide considerable savings to all 10 authorities as they will be able to share key costs.

Exeter City Council's Scrutiny Committee - Community will be asked to approve a draft assessment policy and participation strategy for Devon Home Choice at a meeting on Tuesday 11 November.

Both closely mirror the existing Exeter Home Choice scheme.

Whilst mobility will be a key feature of the new scheme, moves into districts will be closely monitored to make sure tenancies are fairly allocated between local authority areas.

Cllr Rob Hannaford, Lead Councillor for Housing and Social Inclusion, said: "Devon Home Choice will greatly improve the range of social housing solutions available to Exeter residents in housing need.

"Whilst Exeter will obviously be a popular location for applicants from other parts of the county the scheme will be carefully managed to ensure Exeter maintains a good balance of incoming and outgoing applicants.
