Ella the Owl visited the Journal offices on Friday as she gears up for the Twilight Walk on Saturday, July 11.
The giant purple owl dropped in to say thank-you to the Journal for linking up with Hospiscare to promote the fundraising walk.
Ella, who is the mascot for the charity event, also paid a visit to the pupils at Brixington Primary School to drum up support.
The walk takes place over either five miles or 10 miles, starting and finishing at The Maer and taking in the marina and Phear Park.
This year’s theme is Hawaiian, and Ella the Owl will be leading the way when the walk begins at 6pm.
In the last few weeks, the number of entries for the walk has gone up from 300 to more than 500, surpassing last year’s total of 400.
Ella, who is a wise old owl and speak, told the Journal: “It’s more than we have had in the last two years.
“The general response has been fantastic and everyone has been so positive. Most people seem to have a link with Hospiscare.
“It appeals to people because it’s a challenge that does good things. It’s also very local – we’re making the most of Exmouth beach.
“People taking part know the money raised is going to a good cause.”
Vital funds will be raised by the walk to provide support and care annually for around 2,000 patients and their families.
Entry to the event costs £15 per person and forms are available from www.twilightwalk.org.uk or by ringing 01392 688020.
• The organisers are looking for volunteers to help out on the night to provide support at The Maer or to be course marshals. Anyone interested should ring Lucy Hancock on 01392 688062.
