Yesterday's Brixington by-elections have produced a double Conservative success, with the party's candidate Darryl Nicholas taking the vacant district and town council seats.

In the election for East Devon District Council, Mr Nicholas defeated Independent East Devon Alliance candidate Robin Humphreys and Liberal Democrat Alex Sadiq, while in the election for Exmouth Town Council he defeated Ms Sadiq.

The by-elections were held following the death of Conservative councillor David Chapman.

The result sees Mr Nicholas, a former Mayor of Exmouth, returning to elected office, having previously served on the two councils before standing down in 2011.

He said: “David Chapman was an absolute gentleman and worked very hard for our community. We were extremely close, and I stood once again in Brixington, the area where I grew up, to continue the great work that he was doing.

“Like David, my aim will be to fight for Exmouth - ensuring it has a vibrant future and offers opportunities to residents of all ages.”

The full results of the two elections were as follows:

East Devon District Council Brixington Ward

Darryl Nicholas (Conservative), 425 votes (elected)

Robin Humphreys (Independent East Devon Alliance), 324

Alex Sadiq (Liberal Democrats), 286

Exmouth Town Council Brixington Ward

Darryl Nicholas (Conservative), 551 votes (elected)

Alex Sadiq (Liberal Democrats), 454
