A village primary school is set to expand, allowing it to take more pupils from new housing developments.

Woodbury Primary School is hoping to build a new double classroom, which will form a purpose-built early years teaching base for the school’s youngest pupils.

Multiple housing developments in Woodbury have recently received planning permission, and the new classroom will allow the school to handle this extra demand, increasing its capacity from 168 to 210.

It will also allow the school to improve its facilities for existing pupils, with the school’s music room, which is currently used as a classroom, being reinstated.

After a consultation with parents before Christmas went well, governors are presently consulting with various stakeholders to seek their views and comments in respect of the proposed enlargement.

If all goes well, it is hoped the new classroom will be in place and ready for the start of the new school year this September.

Chairman of governors Graham Gerdes said: “The governing body considers that this popular primary school needs to be enlarged to keep in step with the increase in number of children who will live in the new housing developments and the current influx of families with young children moving into existing houses in Woodbury village.

“It is vital that children attend their local primary school which supports their social and educational development.”

Headteacher Nigel Tancock said: “There are clear advantages for increasing the school’s present capacity of 168 to 210 pupils.

“Additional classrooms would allow greater flexibility when organising classes and, in due course as extra staff are employed, there would be opportunities to introduce additional skills and expertise that would complement the school’s existing provision and further enhance educational opportunities and experiences for pupils.”

The school’s pupils are also said to have been excited by the plan at a recent pupil forum, particularly at the prospect of reclaiming their music room.
