Community benefit society Rolle Exmouth Limited (REL) is to be wound up ‘as soon as possible’.

The decision was made at a meeting of shareholders this week.

REL had hoped to secure some, or all, of the former Plymouth University campus at Rolle College for community use, only to be surprised last September when the university announced the sale of the site to Exeter Deaf Academy.

It was agreed that REL should be wound up, with the two remaining members of the board of directors not wishing to continue, and no volunteers coming forward to take over after the sale of the site.

Shareholders heard REL is solvent and can therefore be wound up fairly easily, but those who bought shares will not be able to claim any money back.

Outgoing acting chairman Roy Pryke said he believed Exmouth could and should still work with the deaf academy for the most beneficial future possible for the site and the community.

He added that, while ‘dismayed, frustrated and angry’ at the actions of Plymouth University, REL could take pride in its achievements, and said he wanted to thank present and past directors, including recent chairman Deborah Hallett, shareholders and all volunteer supporters for their ‘hard work, energy and enthusiasm’.
