May Day fun was had by all at Bassetts Farm Primary School when the youngsters held their traditional spring celebrations

May Day fun was had by the pupils of Bassetts Farm Primary School when the youngsters celebrated the arrival of spring with a host of traditional entertainment.

For the first time at the school, pupils got to grips with the challenge of dancing around the maypole.

The youngsters also learned and performed a range of traditional country and folk dances.

Parents tucked into cream teas and more than 400 scones baked by the school kitchen staff.

Deputy headteacher Chris Clarkson said: “It was wonderful community event. It was the first time we had ever done it. It was a lot of fun.

“It was wonderful to see the children come dressed in their own clothes; they were so colourful.”

The celebrations were held as part of the school’s half term project, learning about Kings and Queens.

All profits raised from the May Day celebrations will fund a fairytale ball at the end of the month.

The pupils will come dressed as fairytale characters - kings, queens and princesses - to celebrate the end of the topic.
