A bid to demolish garages and build five industrial units at R and R Motors on Victoria Way has not been supported by the town council.
Cllr Steve Gazzard said: “I am pleased something is going to be done to tidy the place up.
“My concern is that the units (six metres at the front and four metres at the back) will be higher than the surrounding buildings.”
The garages were the scene of a fire in February 2009.
The plans will be decided by district planners.
