EXMOUTH and District are keen to get more local people to volunteers to help run activities for toddlers.

Staff at the Moorfield and Egremont Road Centre’s need support staff to run sessions and play volunteers to play with children while parents are training or getting advice.

Volunteers can also support specific activities for instance as a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter, counsellors and even garden volunteers.

Nicky Nicholls, Breastfeeding Support Co-ordinator said: “I work with new mums and tiny babies in their first few weeks together.

“Sometimes the mums we meet have older pre-school children. It is fantastic for us if we have a friendly and enthusiastic volunteer at our group who is willing to play with the children.

“This allows us the one to one time we really need with the mums.”

Volunteer’s Coordinator Rhonda Jones of the Centre said that becoming a volunteer can be a great opportunity to try something new, gain skills, develop confidence and get a recent reference, as well as feeling valued for your input and enjoying being part of a team.

She said: “Sometimes people volunteer just to be part of something and for the social interaction but whatever the reason we are keen to involve local people, aged 18 and over from different backgrounds to reflect our community and would especially welcome more positive male role models.”

She added that there was also the chance to train in the latest qualification, Diploma in the Children’s and Young People Workforce, which is replacing the existing NVQ.

“Just a couple of hours a week can make all the difference to local families and their children.”
