Budleigh Salterton’s Jubilee Shelter on the seafront has been unveiled by town mayor Courtney Richards and the Otter Valley Association’s (OVA) chairman Nicola Daniel.
The shelter’s make-over cost around 15,000 and was paid for by the town council, donations and the OVA, which designed the impressive interpretation boards which adorn the inside. Other features include a glass screen etched with ‘1952 Diamond Jubilee 2012’.
Cllr Richards said: “I am delighted. The main refurbishment work was completed and ready in time for the jubilee weekend and only the interpretation boards were left to be added - and they are fantastic, a great finishing touch.”
Nicola Daniel said: “When the World Heritage Coastal Team came to Budleigh Salterton...a member of the audience asked why we had no interpretation panels like Sidmouth and Lyme Regis. The answer was that no-one had asked them. The decision of the town council to revamp and lease the shelter as its jubilee project led the OVA to think that a site might have been found.
“The wonderful result is a shelter that Budleigh Salterton can be proud of. It is truly a community project and one we should all be proud of.”
