Sporting heroes from around the Exmouth area have been recognised for their community spirit.

East Devon District Council invited 14 people nominated by town and parish councils to attend its chairman’s garden party.

Among the councils submitting nominees were Woodbury, Lympstone, and East Budleigh parish councils, and Budleigh Salterton Town Council.

The Woodbury nominee was Jill Dupain, who has started a hockey club in Exmouth where she coaches more than 200 children per week.

The Lympstone nominee was Steve Pope, youth secretary and treasurer at Lympstone Football Club.

The East Budleigh nominee was Richard Slade, a keen volunteer heavily involved with the local football club.

The Budleigh Salterton nominee was Kelly Browring, founder of the town’s girls football team.

At the event, where all the nominees received certificates, district council chairman Andrew Moulding said: “It’s a privilege to honour our sporting champions who very often are the lifeblood of their communities.”
