POTENTIAL council tenants will find it easier to get council homes due to a new form of advertising in the local presses by East Devon District Council.

The Council will be running fortnightly advertisements in the local press giving details of the number and type of properties it has that are empty and ready for letting.

New rules mean if anyone wants to be considered for a tenancy of one or more of the properties, then they need to let the housing needs team at the Council know by 'bidding' for it.

To 'bid' on a house potential tenants must first phone the council where they are then given a recorded message with the details of all the properties currently available, the caller then has seven days to put in a 'bid'.

Councillor Jill Elson, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: "The Council is committed to giving tenants and potential tenants freedom of choice in selecting their new home and I welcome this new initiative. By advertising our properties in this way, more people will be able to see what is available and it will give anyone who is eligible the opportunity to apply for a property of their choice."

The number to call to bid is (01395)517469
