Councillors will be asked to ratify the beginning of works on the realignment of an Exmouth seafront road and car park at a cabinet meeting this evening (Wednesday, October 31).
Members of the East Devon District Council (EDDC) cabinet have been advised to approve the start of works which form ‘phase one’ of the Exmouth seafront regeneration scheme.
If councillors agree, the £1.2 million works to realign the Queen’s Drive road and car park could begin next month.
According to agenda papers, works had been expected to begin in September, but delays in completing a developer agreement with Grenadier Estates – who will be creating a watersports centre on the seafront as part of ‘phase two’ - meant work had been put back.
An officer’s report ahead of tonight’s meeting is recommending that members approve the commencement of works.
The report said: “The council could commence work on the road and car park now. There is a short window of opportunity to start now, in early November.
“After this, our contractor is not able to commence work until January at the earliest.
“Commencing work now would ensure work commences before winter sets in to enable a projected completion by spring next year.
“An opening of the new car park by spring 2019 is highly desirable to avoid impact on the visitor season.”
EDDC cabinet will meet at Knowle, Sidmouth, at 5.30pm.
