I am writing in defence of Salem Chapel and Schoolroom, East Budleigh. Salem Chapel is a fine example of a dissenters' chapel which has been in the village since 1719. It is a grade 2* listed building of national importance and has a schoolroom attached.

I am writing in defence of Salem Chapel and Schoolroom, East Budleigh.Salem Chapel is a fine example of a dissenters' chapel which has been in the village since 1719. It is a grade 2* listed building of national importance and has a schoolroom attached. The chapel is now a community centre, which, since restoration in 2006, has hosted many events. Recently, it hosted more than 90 people for one of the Budleigh Salterton Festival events and also a wedding fair. We have a large number of visitors to the chapel who have supported its restoration.I feel the community shop will be a great asset to the village. However, it is unfortunate that Paul Wheeler finds it necessary to criticise other East Budleigh institutions in putting the case for the shop.M Crone-Smith,Secretary to Friends of Salem Chapel,The Old Manse, Budleigh Hill, East Budleigh.
