DRAKES Primary School bookworms are preparing to handover their love of looking after the school library to younger pupils.

The year six youngsters responsible for the running of their library are in the process of tutoring and mentoring year five pupils in preparation to take on the role once the older children move to secondary school.

The older children were each recently awarded a small gift from the school to thank their efforts, before the pupils passed on their library badges to those stepping into their shoes.

Drakes school headteacher Carron Saunders said the librarian role taught life skills and encouraged pupils to learn about the day-to-day running of the school.

She said: "Our library is a very valuable space in the school and the pupil librarians have a vital role in keeping it a positive and vibrant place.

"They manage a rota and keep it open every break time - it's inspiring to see how full it always is of pupils not just reading but also with those playing games such as chess and others participating in the various activities that the librarians set as part of their role.

"Everyone is working so hard on the fundraising for the new stock so we are particularly excited this term about the boost it will give this critical area of the school."

Drakes School is in the process of raising cash for its library fund and hopes to raise 4,000 to pay for non-fiction books focussing on key term topics.
