A GENEROUS donation from Palmers Funeral Directors of Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton will help make a lasting permanent memorial in Phear Park, dedicated to the Devonshire Regiment, a reality.

A GENEROUS donation from Palmers Funeral Directors of Exmouth and Budleigh Salterton will help make a lasting permanent memorial in Phear Park, dedicated to the Devonshire Regiment, a reality.

They donated £300 towards the memorial which will cost £2000 - and follows a £1000 donation from Devon County Council.

The battalion, which was established in 1685, has taken part in many conflicts including the Boer War, the battle of the Somme in The Great War First as well as playing an important part in the Normandy landings during World War Two.

And the memorial, which will be made from granite stone, will stand approximately 30 inches high by two-feet wide, and bear the name and badge of the regiment.

It will stand alongside other memorials, including the 9/11 memorial.

Martin Fumagall and Pam Clarke of Palmers presented the cheque at Exmouth FC to former Devonshire servicemen.

Martin, a former serviceman said: "We have a certain amount of money every year that we give to local charities and good causes.

"I was a serviceman myself in the Royal Artillery and now the Devon and Dorset's have been amalgamated it was fitting that there is a lasting tribute.

"They fought during the war and the veterans, many of which live in Exmouth should be remembered and honoured and a memorial in Phear Park would be fitting.

"Hopefully we can get a Royal down here to unveil it."

The memorial will be built in two phases - the first to be completed next month and the second by May 2009.

The memorial will be unveiled on June 6, D-day - a day enshrined in the history of the regiment.

Memorial fundraiser Lionel Howell said the weekend event promised a host of entertainment over the three days, including the former Devon and Dorset band, Salamanca, US Navy colour party, Royal Naval historic flight, a 40s night and picnic, dog show, teddy bears' picnic and 10-circuit run around the park, with limited edition memorial cups and prizes for the winners.
