An East Devon charity has received a welcome financial boost from Exmouth Raleigh Rotary Club.

Devon Freewheelers was the chosen charity for club president Dick Francis during his year in the role, which concludes at the end of June.

With funds raised from various events during the year, Dick was able to hand over a cheque for £1,225 to Devon Freewheelers’ founder Daniel Lavery.

The charity uses motorbikes to transport essential medical supplies between hospitals in Devon, and was established by Daniel after a similar charity in Northern Ireland helped his wife during a medical emergency.

Dick said: “Before the presentation, Daniel gave a powerful and very moving account of how he came to establish the Freewheelers based on his own family’s devastating experience.

“He told the Rotary members that the Freewheelers are absolutely dependent on donations and assured them that this money would be extremely valuable towards keeping the group active.”
