DEVON and Cornwall Police have launched a campaign to help reduce burglary this Christmas.

Over the festive period officers recommend you take care by keeping doors and windows locked and secure, and by keeping presents and valuables away from outside view.

'Not everyone is welcome this Christmas' is the key message in this year's campaign to remind shoppers that any Christmas presents on show in their homes can be a target for criminals.

Devon and Cornwall Police recommend the following advice to help keep your home safe over the festive period:

Keep your windows and doors secure* at all times

Keep presents and valuables away* from outside view

Mark and register gifts and* valuables

Dispose carefully of all boxes and* packaging e.g. from expensive items

Bob Bunney, the force crime reduction advisor for Devon and Cornwall police, said a third of burglars entered premises through an open door or window.

He said: "Burglary in Devon and Cornwall is low compared to other areas of the country, however we are entering a period of time where this type of crime traditionally peaks.

"By reminding residents to take safety precautions and remain vigilant we will hopefully reduce opportunities for criminals.

"The majority of burglaries are caused by opportunists who steal from homes where windows are left open and doors either open or unlocked.

"To avoid the consequences of becoming a victim of crime during this traditionally vulnerable time everyone must continue to act responsibly and remain vigilant to reduce the opportunities for crime"

Police across Devon and Cornwall have been delivering Christmas cards and putting up posters to remind home occupants about keeping their homes safe over the festive period.
