A dog trainer from Otterton is hoping her pooch will emerge as the best in the land after reaching a national final.

Emma Hellier’s blue merle border collie, Swift, has qualified for the UK Agility Grand Finals, in the agility category.

Emma, 39, reached the finals last year with her younger dog, Smart, in the steeplechase category, and is looking forward to returning.

She said: “I am excited. It’s indoors which will be quite exciting and quite noisy I think.

“There will be lots of people and lots of dogs. We are looking forward to it.”

Emma, who works as a public rights of way officer for Devon County Council, says if everything goes to plan Swift has what it takes to succeed.

“Swift’s a very fast little dog, hence the name, and if she gets it right on the day she has got a good chance of doing well.

“We’ve got to both get it right. We have to work as a team on the day.”

Emma and Swift’s training for the big day has received a boost after Greendale Farm Shop agreed to sponsor them, with owner Rowan Carter also providing space for them to train and store equipment.

The finals, at which Swift will compete against 19 other dogs, take place in Bristol on November 30.
