Exmouth artists are to take seafront walkers on a trip back in time with a mural celebrating the Jurassic Coast.

Members of Exmouth Art Group will create the mural on the 90-metre-long back wall of Ocean on Queens Drive, which runs alongside Madeira Walk.

It will depict the periods of prehistory represented by the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, with marine life, reptiles and dinosaurs pictured among tropical seas, searing deserts, humid primeval forests and swamps and volcanic eruptions.

John Wokersien, a Jurassic Coast trustee, ambassador for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site and chairman of the mural working group, thanked Gilly Newcombe and Graham Bell of Exmouth Art Group for leading the design of the mural and project managing the work; David and Linda Wilson of Wilsons Paints for offering paint and materials along with advice; Steve Davies of Ocean leaseholder LED; and the site’s owners Mark and Rachael Quinn.

John added that those involved also owed thanks to the late Councillor Alison Greenhalgh, who died last year.

John said: “She would want it to have been known that we are representing life as it was in the world at the time and not specific creatures which would have necessarily roamed this area.

“Nevertheless, the fossils of many great creatures have been found along the coast that would have lived during a time when life on earth was quite different.

“Alison’s vitality and enthusiasm for making things happen in Exmouth will live on in the mural once it is completed and we owe our thanks to her for her vision and drive which made us all the more determined to see the project through.”
