AN anniversary card from Her Majesty the Queen was among scores of warm wishes received by Budleigh Salterton husband and wife Elaine, 82, and John Harewood, 84, who recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.Mr and Mrs Harewood, of Swains Road, married 60 years ago at St James' Church, in West Yorkshire, after meeting in October 1946 in the library at Manchester University where Elaine, then 20, was studying for a degree in general arts and John, 22, was studying English with honours.The pair married shortlyafter John graduated and returned from serving as an infantryman with the Queens Royal Regiment.The couple, who wed when rationing was still rife, now have five children, 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.John and Elaine, who moved to Budleigh 16 years ago from Taunton, in Somerset, said patience and forgiveness were the secret of their long and happy marriage.Former teacher Elaine said the day she married John, who was later ordained into the ministry, was still fresh in her mind. John was married in his demob suit and with a £100 pay-off from the army the couple bought a motorbike which they rode pillion.
